BMC Working on King Salman Conference Center

The King Salman International Convention Center, located in Al Madina, is a state-of-the-art facility designed to accommodate the most important Islamic conferences and major events in the region. The project is being built on a 91,000 square-meter plot located five kilometers northeast of the Prophet’s Mosque in Al Madina. The project features a massive hall that can accommodate up to 2,500 people along with additional multi-purpose halls for up to 1,500 people, 1,300 meeting rooms, offices, and parking for 1,000 vehicles. The project is LEED Silver Certified, meaning it is approved by the US Green Building Council as a sustanaible and environmentally friendly structure.

BMC was contracted to handle the waterproofing and roofing systems for this ambitious and prestigious project, specifically the installation of car park, wet areas, planters and fountains waterproofing systems, and finally, the most crucial element: an innovative and groundbreaking roofing system, the first of its kind to be installed in the region.

This new roofing system involves tapered thermal insulation, a type of insulation system that is responsible for both slope layer and thermal insulation. This type of system comes in prefabricated boards that are applied on site based on the approved design of the slope based on the location of the drains. The design was prepared by BMC’s technical office and stamped and approved by the supplier before installation. The waterproofing membranes used were TPO (thermoplastic olefin) membranes, white-colored membranes that fully bond over the tapered insulation boards upon application.

This type of roofing system also includes geotextile protection and white-coated tiles to provide a specified solar-reflective index to minimize the effects of the structure on microclimates and human and wildlife habits by reducing heat islands in order to fit the LEED Silver certification requirements as set by the US Green Building Council.

Work on the project is nearing completion, with BMC anticipating a final handover of their work soon. The King Salman International Convention Center is scheduled to open later this year.
